Overview:

Queen Mary University of London (QMUL) is one of the UK's leading research‐focused higher education institutions. We teach and research across a wide range of subjects in the humanities, social sciences, law, medicine and dentistry, and science and engineering.

The Sustainability team have responsibility for promoting sustainability, developing and implementing policies and management systems and co-ordinating sustainability across QMUL. The team work on a number of projects including staff and student engagement, an energy and environmental management system, a Carbon Management and Implementation Plan, waste management, sustainable catering, biodiversity, transport as well as others that address our significant sustainability impacts.

We recognises that we have a significant impact on the local environment and we strive to address our impacts in all aspects of our operations, across all sites and research activities. We do this through the implementation of our Environmental Policy, Sustainability Action Plan, Energy and Environmental Management System, Carbon Management and Implementation Plan and our procurement activities.

We work with Queens Mary’s Student Union on 'Green Mary'. The Students' Union has passed policy encouraging the University to divest from fossil fuels, diversify the food options in our outlets, and introduced Meat Free Mondays. These policies have come directly from students and have been implemented to make Queen Mary Green Mary!

We need:

The role would suit someone who is a quick learner, passionate about sustainability, has knowledge of environmental management systems and has excellent interpersonal, project and time management skills.

This post holder will support the Estates and Facilities Sustainability Team in delivering engagement, environmental management and capital projects. The post holder will also support the monitoring and reporting of energy data and the sustainability KPIs of capital projects to address projects overall sustainability and contribution to QMUL’s carbon reduction target.

The role will also support the effective implementation of current engagement and communication initiatives in order to increase the pro-environmental behaviours of students, staff and other stakeholders at QMUL.

This role offers an exciting opportunity to gain experience and knowledge across a broad range of sustainability impact areas and to get involved in the practical implementation of capital, environmental management and engagement projects.

You are:

  • A graduate.

  • Knowledgeable of, and committed to, sustainability issues and their importance within a university environment.

  • Able to motivate and engage others in sustainability.

  • IT literate in all Office applications but especially Word, Excel and PowerPoint.

  • Able to gather, interpret, present and report data with a high attention to detail.

  • Able to plan and organise your work appropriately when faced with tight deadlines.

  • Experienced using a variety of communication techniques to deliver a clear message.

In an ideal world, you are also:

  • Aware and have an understanding of the challenges of implementing change in a large organisation and how these challenges can be overcome.

  • Knowledgeable of environmental management systems.

  • A postgraduate with a qualification in a related discipline or the ability to demonstrate knowledge of a wide range of sustainability issues including energy, waste, transport, biodiversity, procurement etc.

The successful graduate will have opportunities to learn about being a team player, developing communication skills in different mediums and will gain experience of different sustainability issues as well as gaining project and event management skills including budgeting, planning, project implementation and evaluation.

The post holder will be in regular contact with staff at all levels across the University and the Students’ Union as well as with students and external organisations, gaining experience in supporting and managing internal and external projects within the university.

The full-time nature of this role will ensure the post holder will be an integral part of the sustainability team to create and drive forward further initiatives across QMUL.

Day in the Life / Key Responsibilities

  • Support the delivery of the annual sustainability and carbon capital projects plan.

  • Assist in updating University Environmental policy

  • Identify ways to support the development of existing engagement initiatives at QMUL (Green Mary Week, Fairtrade, Volunteering etc.).

  • Support the introduction of sustainability and energy KPIs for

    • The existing building stock

    • Monitor the impact of projects by gathering and reporting on qualitative and quantitative data from differing software packages.

  • Support the implementation of QMUL’s Energy and Environmental Management System by taking part in the internal audit process and ongoing monitoring of the system.

  • Prioritise key tasks and workload to ensure successful project delivery.

  • Undertake work, as identified by the Sustainability Team, to support the delivery of a variety of projects, which will contribute to achieving QMUL’s sustainability targets.

  • Identify other areas of interest, within the remit of sustainability at QMUL, to work on which will support the post holders professional development.

  • Assist the team in communicating our environmental policy using a number of communication channels such as; Web, Email, Facebook, Instagram.

Nitty Gritty Details:

Hours/Week: 35 hours

Annual leave: 25 day per annum plus Bank Holidays and additional planned Christmas Closure

Work outside normal hours: Occasional work out of hours to accommodate halls visits, audits and events
