Job Description


The Royal Bournemouth and Christchurch Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (RBCH) serves a population of about 500,000 in Bournemouth, Poole and Christchurch. The Trust includes the Royal Bournemouth Hospital, Christchurch Hospital and a Sterile Services Department based at Alderney Hospital.

RBCH is a leader in sustainability and has won awards in travel, waste, behaviour change and green spaces. The Capital & Estates Management Department are looking to recruit a temporary Sustainability Officer to cover Maternity Leave for a 13 month period (starting June 2017).

The Royal Bournemouth & Christchurch Hospital NHS Foundation Trust is looking for an enthusiastic and pragmatic Sustainability Practitioner who can further develop the Trusts sustainability initiatives. The role will focus on assisting the estates team in developing, planning, implementing and monitoring its sustainability objectives, strategies and projects.

You should have a degree (or equivalent) in a sustainability related field with proven experience. Excellent communication skills and a comprehensive knowledge of relevant legislation and best practice are essential.


This role will ensure that a certain level of engagement and a point of contact for queries remains during the maternity leave period, as well as providing support to the Carbon Group members to ensure the continued embedding and engagement with the sustainability agenda and reporting requirements in all key areas across the Trust.

The Sustainability Officer will initiate, develop, manage and deliver environmental projects across the Trust. This post will also involve a coordinating and supportive role to ensure the effective implementation of the Green Impact scheme and other behaviour change programmes in order to achieve an increase in pro-environmental behaviours of staff within our hospitals.

This is a fixed term Maternity Cover role until the end of Jul 2018.

Further work opportunities may arise within the team over the duration of the placement but funding will influence the likelihood of any further opportunities within the team.

Outputs and Key Tasks


  1. To assist the Estates Team in developing, planning, implementing and monitoring its sustainability objectives, strategies and projects.

  2. To lead on the development of the Green Impact Award Scheme, recruiting clinical and non-clinical staff in all directorates to establish a trust wide team. The post-holder to provide on-going support to Green Impact representatives.

  3. To regularly liaise with all levels of staff encouraging buy-in and support of the sustainability agenda.

  4. To act as lead contact for the Green Impact Scheme representatives and support them to deliver savings and engage the Trust community, by holding regular awareness events, leading environmental departmental audits and serving as the main point of contact and source of information for the Green Impact representatives.

  5. To support the delivery of the Trust Sustainability Strategy and assist with the development of sustainable utilities, waste management, sustainable travel & environmental services.

Key Tasks

  1. Support the Communication and Engagement Strategy to ensure that the programme is communicated in a co-ordinated way within the Trust and elsewhere.

  2. Required to translate complex information regarding climate change and energy reduction and put into context of NHS Setting, as an aid to influence staff behaviours.

  3. Compile regular news articles for use in internal and external publications

  4. To assist with ensuring, that all new environmental, waste, energy and sustainability legislation is implemented in a timely manner, and that existing legislation is maintained and adhered to.

  5. Devise and implement efficient systems and monitoring processes for the completion of designated elements of the Sustainability & Good Corporate Citizenship Action Plan.

  6. Provide quarterly reports to the Carbon Group and Waste Management Group on progress against the sustainability agenda and key KPIs.

  7. Produce technical reports and business case for implementation of energy saving projects, and support Carbon Group members in writing business cases.

  8. Present to managers and staff on better ways of working to ensure that the Trust meets its carbon reduction targets

  9. Assist in the development and implementation of strategy and policy on designated elements of the programme.

  10. To continually research resources and concepts in the field of sustainability.

Energy Management

  1. Support with monthly finance reporting, forecasting, and other tasks

  2. Support with annual Trust CRC Energy Efficiency Scheme submission and compliance

  3. Support with submission and data collection for Trust ERIC Returns

  4. Assist with researching and introducing energy efficient products to the Trust

  5. To assist with investigating and evaluation alternative sources of energy and opportunities that may become available.

  6. Produce utility budget projections for helping of setting budgets, undertaking research on likely trends of energy commodity price.

Waste Management

  1. Research and implement recycling initiatives and clearly demonstrate the benefits gained.

  2. Carry out internal audits on wards and departments ensuring that recommendations and advise is given to increase correct segregation

  3. Support with submission and data collection for Trust ERIC Returns

Sustainable Travel

  1. To assist with the implementation and achieving the objectives as per the Trusts Active Travel Plan

  2. Represent the Sustainability Manager at external Transport meetings when required.

Personal Specification


  1. Degree in related environmental field

  2. Knowledge of a wide range of environmental issues including energy, waste, transport, biodiversity, sustainable construction and procurement

  3. An excellent communicator with effective negotiation skills.

  4. Good interpersonal skills with the ability to build and maintain effective working relationships.

  5. Numerate, with the ability to organise, manage and analyse data.

  6. Ability to research and collate material to produce high-quality written information for reporting and awareness raising purposes.

  7. Ability to work in a team and in other groups to achieve team and group objectives

  8. A working knowledge of Microsoft Office packages


  1. Understanding of current, relevant environmental legislation & best practice

  2. Practical experience of awareness raising on environmental issues

Salary (per annum pro rata): £19,409 to £22,683
