|Project||Fareham Borough Council|
|Employer||Fareham Borough Council|
Change Agents UK Level: 1
Location: Fareham, Hampshire
Number of Positions: 1
What will this position involve?
Fareham Borough Council is working with Sainsbury’s to deliver the flagship ‘Waste less, Save more’ (WLSM) campaign until Spring 2018. The campaign aims to reduce food waste in the area and cut household food bills, by engaging as many households as possible and highlighting how much food is currently wasted. A Food Saver Champion is being recruited to engage with residents about food waste, and also give advice on how to make full use of the Council’s recycling services.
The main objective of the campaign is to reach as many householders as possible, by working with our partner organisations; specifically housing providers, schools, day nurseries and community groups.
Who would this position suit?
This position will provide excellent experience for someone looking for a career in the environmental sector, community engagement, marketing, or the waste and recycling industry.
You will be out-going, confident, organised, able to work on your own initiative and interested in working with children. Some knowledge of nutrition and cooking would be beneficial.
You should be passionate about food and finding ways to reduce food waste
Who is Fareham Borough Council?
The post is situated within Fareham Borough Council Operations Department, and is based in the Depot. The refuse and recycling service operates on an alternate weekly basis, emptying refuse bins one week and recycling the next. Food waste is a significant proportion of the waste we collect.
Fareham Borough Council do not operate a food recycling collection service because it is prohibitively expensive, and there are no local processing facilities. Instead they are focussing on raising awareness of the amount of food wasted and the money residents could save by using all the food they buy; as well as the associated environmental benefits.
What is the Team like?
The refuse and recycling service is run by a small but supportive team, in a busy office. You will be required to work on their own initiative with minimal supervision.
Why would you want this position?
This is a fixed term opportunity; you will develop transferable skills in areas such as community engagement, communicating sustainability and project management. The post will provide good grounding for progression within the waste/recycling, or wider sustainability sectors, in the community sector, local government or marketing/publicity.
You will gain experience of project management, community work and detailed knowledge of food matters, as well as knowledge and experience of local government processes and procedures.
