What will this position involve?

The Pathfinder II Project’s aim is to facilitate community-led improvements in resilience and preparedness amongst communities who are at risk of flooding in Northamptonshire, complementing other flood risk management activities, as set out in the Northamptonshire Local Flood Risk Management Strategy.

The project sets out to achieve this aim through the following objectives:

• The promotion of flood resilience to communities in Northamptonshire

• To work with up to 30 communities to develop and improve community and household level preparedness to flood risk through both prevention and preparedness measures

• To support up to 30 communities through the implementation of small scale asset integration works

• To support the further development of the NCC flood Toolkit

• To recruit and train further surface water flood wardens

• To enhance the role and training available to Northamptonshire surface water flood wardens

The Pathfinder II Assistant would support in tasks, projects and initiatives related to the County Council’s Pathfinder II project, particularly in relation to mapping risks, analysing data and organising community events.

The candidate will have excellent communications skills, being able to engage with the public as well as project partners on a daily basis. You will be hard working, organised and have a good attention to detail to analyse data and interpret it.

Northamptonshire County Council is a local government, however this post has been funded by the Anglian Northern Regional Flood and Coastal Committee.

What is the Northamptonshire County Council like?

You will be working within a small friendly team as well as undertaking a lot of joint work with colleagues from outside the organisation.

Why would the successful candidate want this position?

Working within a small team, the applicant will gain knowledge of working within a local authority emergency planning team. Any applicants may be considered for other opportunities within the authority.

Salary (per annum pro rata): £18,000

Key Responsibilities

  1. Provide GIS support to the Pathfinder 2 project and associated activities including desktop flood risk analysis.

  2. Coordinate and support community engagement activity including organising and running community based events.

  3. Develop and maintain positive relationships with partners, Stakeholders and the public.

  4. Support further development of online information resources.

  5. Support NCC’s incident response arrangements.

  6. Complete administrative and financial tasks associated with the role.

  7. Undertake other duties as required commensurate with the role.

  8. To support in tasks, projects and initiatives related to the County Council’s Pathfinder II project, particularly in relation to mapping risks, analysing data and organising community events.


  1. Excellent technical aptitude with the ability to quickly learn and apply new skills.

  2. Excellent organisational skills and ability to multi-task and prioritise work and run on your own initiative.

  3. Good attention to detail.

  4. Excellent problem solving skills and the flexibility to enable working in rapidly changing situations

  5. Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to present at and participate in meetings.

  6. Ability to deliver support services in a calm and professional manner.

  7. Positive and enthusiastic with excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to constructively relate to a wide variety of people including cooperating with other organisations.

  8. Ability to deal with sensitive information in a confidential manner and to assimilate and relay information.


  1. GIS based systems (ie MAPINFO) or equivalent.

  2. Good working knowledge of Microsoft applications

  3. Basic knowledge of physical geography and flood related matters
