Senior Environmental Consultant

Salary (per annum pro rata): £27,000 - £30,000

Start Date: September / October 2021

Contract: Fixed Term until 31st March 2022

Purpose of role:

Are you a proactive and enthusiastic person with experience supporting businesses to improve their environmental impact, then come join our team!

We are looking for a talented individual to work directly with organisations to support them on their sustainability journeys, helping them to understand their environmental impact and taking steps to reduce their impact on the environment and their carbon emissions.

The successful candidate will play a leading role in managing and delivering a programme of works, supporting businesses to work towards net zero, as well as lead on training, events, project management and reporting.

This is an initial 6-month role, with the potential for a longer contract subject to future funding.

Key responsibilities:

This wide-ranging role will include elements of project management, partnership development, communications, direct support to businesses, reporting, line management and linking in to other programmes across the organisation. The successful candidate will have the support of the wider PECT team to drive this exciting project forward. Specific areas of focus include:

  • Building, developing and maintaining partnerships with a range of stakeholders from the private, public and voluntary sector

  • Responsible for engaging SMEs and promoting the project through attending events and targeting SMEs directly

  • Providing one-to-one support to eligible SMEs, including on-site audits and development of detailed reports and action plans

  • Maintaining accurate records, undertaking monitoring and evaluation for support provided, ensuring eligibility criteria is met and evidence is provided and carrying out monthly reporting for the funder

  • Maintaining and continually improving knowledge of Environmental Management and Environmental Legislation

  • Undertaking a range of project management tasks to support across the wider programme, including developing promotional case studies of businesses supported, ongoing development of business processes and reporting

  • Line management of an Environmental Consultant

  • Quality assurance of related deliverables

  • Any other reasonable tasks requested by line manager

  • Seek opportunities to develop new/extend existing work and income streams for PECT. This could be through project development, fundraising and/or partnership working.

Person specification

  • Qualified to degree level or equivalent in an environmental, business or science related discipline

  • Broad experience of practical resource efficiency support delivery and successfully engaging businesses to realise actual savings

  • Experience of working in a busy office environment

  • Experience and confidence to sell business support services

  • Understanding of climate change and sustainability, particularly in relation to SMEs;

  • Excellent communication (oral and written) and interpersonal skills, ability to build and maintain relationships with people at all levels

  • Excellent organisational and time management skills, ability to manage projects and organise work effectively to a tight schedule and to completion

  • IT literate especially in Microsoft Office Software

  • Attention to detail

  • Ability and willingness to travel to deliver support, where possible using sustainable methods of transport

Desirable:

  • Experience of working with businesses, particularly SMEs and understanding the pressures facing the SME sector.

  • Experience of maintaining and developing administrative systems.

  • Associate level membership with IEMA or other professional sustainability organisation.

Hours/Week: 37 (Part time hours will be considered)

Based: This position will be based at PECT’s offices: Ham Lane House, Ham Lane, Peterborough PE2 5UU with a regular need to undertake site visits. There may be opportunities to work from home on some days.

Work outside normal hours: Occasional evening and weekend work will be required

Reports to: Director of Operations

For some activities, such as working directly with children on a regular basis, a DBS check may be required.
