Groundwork East has over 30 years of experience in delivering bespoke projects that use the environment as a catalyst for building a more sustainable future. As their activities develop and area of activity expands they are looking for two experienced, enthusiastic and creative people, one full time and one part time to assist the delivery of a programme of sustainable projects and initiatives across Luton & Bedfordshire.


As a Project Officer you will be working with communities, volunteers and other agencies to develop and deliver a range of local sustainable and behavioural change projects and initiatives that improve the quality of life for local people.

Outputs and Key Tasks

Outputs and Key Tasks

  1. Initiate, develop and deliver environmental projects throughout Bedfordshire alongside identified partner organisations and local groups. This may include growing/gardening projects, river/wetland improvements, play schemes, family education programmes and employment training schemes.

  2. Work across all Trust teams including employment training programmes (with Employment Manager), environmental education initiatives and awareness-raising activities both within and outside of educational settings, landscape design team to develop project designs and youth projects/activities (with the Youth Manager).

  3. Manage volunteers taking part in Groundwork projects, including groups of vulnerable adults, community groups and corporate volunteers. This will include both office-based and practical activities such as food growing and horticulture tasks.

  4. Raise the profile of projects internally and externally with partners, funders and communities through effective publicity, working closely with the Marketing Team.

  5. Identify and apply for external funding for projects and assist local groups and partners to do the same thereby helping to build their capacity.

  6. Identify and liaise with appropriate stakeholders including local authorities, health authorities, schools, youth agencies, businesses and local communities to ensure a coordinated and multi-agency approach.

  7. To effectively manage a varied workload, ensuring all projects are well planned, remain within budget, outputs are achieved and milestones met, through efficient project management.

  8. To attend regular team meetings and supervision with line manager.

  9. To undertake training and development as agreed with line manager.

  10. To be a positive force within the staff team taking personal responsibility for ensuring good morale and positive work relations.

Personal Specification


  1. Previous experience of delivering community/environmental projects.

  2. Excellent organisational, planning, facilitation, time management and project management skills; ability to work to frequently tight, externally fixed deadlines.

  3. Experience of working with a wide range of key partners and building effective relationships.

  4. Experience or understanding of supervising or managing volunteers/sessionals.

  5. Excellent communication and social skills and ability to speak and relate to people of varied backgrounds including tailoring messages to different audiences.

  6. Good knowledge of IT including Microsoft Word and Excel, as well as email and internet use.

  7. The ability to work on own initiative and as part of a team.

  8. A valid driving licence & access to a car insured for business purposes.

  9. Willingness to undertake a DBS check.


  1. A degree or similar qualification in an environmental or community development based subject.

  2. Understanding and interest in current community and environmental issues.

  3. Knowledge of the process of Health and Safety Assessment for practical tasks.

  4. Experience working within schools or other relevant settings - particularly within the environmental education sector.

  5. Previous experience in managing projects.

  6. Knowledge or experience of marketing, bid writing and fundraising.

  7. Experience of working with children, youth, minority ethnic communities, vulnerable adults including those with physical and mental health problems.

  8. An understanding and commitment to the principles of Equal Opportunities.

  9. A knowledge of the procedures of Local Authorities and familiarity with national, regional and local government funding

  10. Up to date Emergency First Aid Training.

  11. Holds a minibus license.

Salary (per annum pro rata): £21,764 - £24,130

Work outside normal hours: Some work outside normal office hours during evenings and at weekends

Base: Groundwork office in Luton (Stockwood Park, off Farley Hill, Luton, LU1 4BH).
